Powering Progress Together

With customers and partners around the world, we apply innovative thinking across our businesses to secure a better energy solution for a changing world... now and for the future.
Shell aims to be the most competitive and innovative energy company in the world. We continue to develop innovative technology solutions to deliver the energy our customers need, opening up new resources and producing more from existing fields.
As part of this vision, for more than 100 years, Shell has developed a sound and profitable business in Egypt as well as contributed to the development of the country’s natural resources and its people. Today, we continue in our vision to be part of Egypt’s future and contribute positively to the country’s economic and social prosperity .
Over time, we have worked closely with our partners in the Egyptian Government represented by the Ministry of Petroleum, the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and Ganoub El Wadi Petroleum Holding Company (GANOPE).
The Shell companies in Egypt employ approximately 300 Egyptians, offering vibrant career opportunities and a strong path for long-term career development.
Shell Egypt has produced many genuine experts in the oil and gas business, a number of who are now working in Egypt’s private or public sector, or internationally in one of Shell’s global businesses. We continue to actively recruit Egyptian university graduates and grow our local talent.
Our focus remains to provide Egypt with a sustainable and efficient energy solution.
Our Upstream Activities
Shell has also been recently awarded exploration rights in three Western Desert onshore blocks as a result of the 2011 International Bid Round: North Matrouh, North East Obaiyed and North Alam El Shawish.
In 2012 Shell and its partners took a $300 million final investment decision to develop the Assil and Karam gas project, adding 200 mmscf/d of production capacity.
In NEAG, Sitra and BED we continue to develop and operate waterflood projects that will help extend the life of the oil field after an initial period of primary recovery.
Whilst we continue to explore and develop traditional oil and gas fields, we also introduce innovative technology solutions to deliver the energy our customers need, opening up new (unconventional) resources and producing more from existing fields through for example improved and enhanced oil recovery. Our technologies help us to remain competitive by raising efficiency, reducing the footprint of our operations, and reducing costs.
Our Joint Venture, Badr El Din Petroleum Company (Bapetco)
The Badr El Din Petroleum Company (Bapetco), was formed in 1983, as a joint venture between Shell and the Egyptian General Petroleum Cooperation (EGPC). Bapetco is responsible for the development and production of Shell’s fields in the Western Dessert utilising 6 drilling and two workover rigs, supporting exploration, appraisal and development drilling activities. Bapetco also operates the oil and gas facilities and plants in BED, NEAG and Obaiyed. The current production level from Bapetco’s operations is around 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
Our Downstream Activities
Shell entered the Egyptian market in 1911 as an upstream and downstream operator and was later nationalized in 1964. Shell resumed operations in Egypt in 1974, initially as an upstream operator. In 1990 Shell reinitiated its downstream presence when Shell Marketing Egypt (SME) was registered to provide motor fuels and lubricants to our customers. Over a period of 20 years a strong market position was established with a terminal, blending plant and over 84 retail stations across Egypt. In 2013, Shell sold its motor fuel retail operations in Egypt to Total as part of a global realignment of our retail business in 20 countries in Africa. Shell remains a market leader in lubricants in Egypt in terms of our market share and commitment to customers.
National Gas Company (NATGAS)
In 2001, Shell embarked on a new gas distribution business, taking an 18% strategic share in NATGAS, a company transporting gas directly to industrial and domestic customers in key areas throughout Egypt. Shell sees great potential in a deregulated and liberalised gas market in Egypt and the NATGAS investment is part of that vision.
Our Community, Our Responsibility
As part of our social responsibility towards host communities, Shell Egypt has developed a number of social investment initiatives and development programmes which primarily focus on human capital development and specifically enterprise development.
The Shell Intilaaqah Egypt Programme provides training and mentorship to young entrepreneurs across Egypt to encourage them to start their own business as a viable career option. Shell also continues to deliver and participate in capacity building and skill development initiatives in industry-related faculties such as the ‘Real Life Project’ at the American University of Cairo and the ‘Al Amal Programme’ (Hope Programme) in addition to upgrading Cairo University’s Petroleum Refinery Lab & Ain Shams, Faculty of Science lab with equipment.
As part of our Western Desert activities a targeted plan promoting local community development and initiatives to source goods and services from local contractors is being pursued.
As part of our strong focus on Health, Safety & Environment (HSE), Shell has worked with the General Authority for Road, Bridges and Land Transport to install 180 reflective road signs at 60 Cairo ring road exits to enhance the safety of driving at night.. Shell has also trained hundreds of school bus drivers on ‘Safe Driving’ and worked on raising awareness on the importance of road safety among children at public schools.
On the smarter mobility front, we introduced the Shell Eco-marathon initiative in Egypt and partnered with three prominent universities to enable student teams from each university to compete globally in a competition to design eco-vehicles that consume the least amount of fuel possible to travel the farthest distance.
